Compeer is a mental health friendship program that aims to improve the quality of life and self esteem of adults with a diagnosed mental illness. Social inclusion is promoted through 1:1 friendships with volunteers and in these face-to-face friendships, a Compeer friend and volunteer will meet for weekly/fortnightly social activities.
One in five Australians will experience a mental illness each year and over 45% will experience it in their lifetime. Mental illness causes major changes in a person’s behaviour, emotions and ability to cope. The associated stigma and social isolation are barriers that can hinder recovery.
Compeer friendships support the person to build resilience and find their own strength to make positive changes in many areas of their life.
