NSW Budget announcement
On Tuesday, the NSW Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet, announced that the State Budget will deliver just 1,300 additional social housing homes across NSW.
The St Vincent de Paul Society recognises that any new social housing is welcome but we are disappointed that the commitment fails to adequately respond to the significant and growing need for social housing.
Can you contact your NSW MP today to express your disappointment that the NSW Government didn’t take this opportunity to invest in significantly more social housing?
More than 51,000 families – or more than 110,000 people – are waiting for social housing right now and this need is projected to increase over the years ahead. Some families have already been waiting for more than 10 years.
To address the chronic shortage and reduce homelessness and housing stress across NSW, our members, volunteers and supporters have been advocating for the NSW Government to increase the supply of social housing by at least 5,000 homes every year for the next ten years. A commitment to build 1,200 new homes falls well short of what is needed.
Can you call or email your NSW MP today to share this same sentiment?

Thank you for the advocacy that you have done so far to secure more social housing. We will keep you up to date as we learn more information over the days to come.

P.S. As part of our advocacy, together we have collected more than 13,500 signatures on our social housing petition which means MPs must debate this issue in NSW Parliament. We will seek to use this upcoming opportunity to draw attention to the inadequacy of today’s announcement and to once again urge the NSW Government to invest in more social housing.
