Vincentians gathered for a wonderful day on Saturday 18 October to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the St Patrick’s Conference Berry since the Conference reformed in 1965.
Members, friends and supporters shared in a beautiful Mass and inspiring homily offered by Mgr. Patrick Faherty, pastor emeritus, followed by a joyful celebration with the community.
Special guests and speakers included Peter Doris, Wollongong Central Council President and Brian Murnane, Vice-President of the Society in NSW, representing the State Council President.
Berry Conference members were recognised with long-service certificates, with the combined generosity of current members surpassing 140 years’ service.
Greg Troy, Conference President, was among those recognised with service certificates.
“We’re a small Conference and we no longer have big demand for welfare visits,” Greg explained. “Even though we cover a large area, including Berry, Shoalhaven Heads and Kangaroo Valley, the area has grown into a relatively high socio-economic area.”
Nowadays, St Patrick’s Conference focuses on care activities, including aged care, social visits and hospital visits.
In 1965, Berry was a vastly different and much more rural town. Changes to the dairy and timber industries resulted in declining employment opportunities. Local shops included a saddler and haberdashery, alongside of vacant buildings.
The young Conference busily rolled up its sleeves, contributing a rich legacy to the area since its founding. This includes the work of Christine and Jim Da Silva, the first manager of John Purcell House, Nowra and progenitor of Jim Da Silva Farm in West Nowra, an idyllic service focused on disability and inclusion.
A special highlight of the anniversary celebrations was the presentation of an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Leo XIV to Christine and Jim Da Silva in heartfelt recognition of their incredible dedication to service in the Society.
“They were involved in just about everything! I’ve always said that they put their faith into action – big time. Lovely people too,” Greg said.
Congratulations and special thanks to everyone involved in making this milestone so special. Here's to continuing the mission of compassion and service for many more years to come!
