A simple call for volunteers has grown into a meaningful friendship for Adamstown St Columbus Conference member, Kath Stanmore.
In late October 2023, Vinnies Connect – an Inclusion program delivered by Vinnies Services – reached out to the Conference seeking someone who could become a companion and mentor to a local woman, Jodie.
Jodie was experiencing loneliness after the passing of her adopted parents, and feeling isolated with her sister living in Sydney. In November 2023, Kath formally stepped into the role and a friendship was born.
Vinnies Connect is a one-to-one program that matches people experiencing loneliness with caring volunteers, in the hopes that a friendship will blossom. Vinnies Connect matches people who share similar interests, live nearby each other and are keen to meet regularly in casual social settings, like cafes, parks and shops.
Christopher Stevens, who has been managing Vinnies Connect for eight years, said that the program’s strength lies in the fact that it fosters companionship through everyday engagement, such as dog-walking and catching up over coffee.
Christopher, who has facilitated countless matches, believes that encouraging small social risks and building up people’s trust and conversation skills are natural steps toward inclusion. “Friendship is a pre-cursor for wellbeing,” Christopher said. “It’s a joy to see someone ‘come to life’ and re-join their community.”
Since 2023, Kath and Jodie have spent time together each Monday, sharing a range of activities including swimming, trips to the movies, picnics and BBQs at Blackbutt, ten pin bowling, shopping outings and the occasional brunch or lunch together.
Kath has also welcomed Jodie into her Friday craft group, where she enjoys colouring in while chatting with the other members as they knit and crochet.
Over time, what began as a mentoring opportunity has become a genuine friendship. Kath says the experience has been deeply rewarding for them both.
“Jodie has become a dear friend and we both value our time together,” Kath shared.
