For Ann-Maree, volunteering is a calling that has shaped her life in profound ways. Her journey of service at the St Vincent de Paul Society began when she joined fellow teachers to operate a monthly van service, extending long teaching days into evening outreach that planted the seed for many years of commitment to helping others.
Today, Ann-Maree serves in multiple capacities with quiet dedication at the Society. As Spiritual Advisor for her local Conference, she provides guidance and makes regular visits to those in need. At Coniston Hub, she volunteers weekly on the Vinnies Van while also managing crucial client data that supports people we assist. Even the simple act of collecting and delivering donated bread twice weekly reflects her steadfast commitment to serving people directly and behind-the-scenes ways.
Some of Ann-Maree's most cherished moments come from working alongside her teenage grandson during our Winter Appeals and Christmas Hamper distributions. Through these shared experiences, she's watched him discover the joy of service as part of his school's Social Justice program, passing on the values of compassion and community to a new generation.
The profound connections she makes with fellow volunteers and those we serve sustain Ann-Maree in this work. She often speaks of the humble, compassionate people who inspire her daily through their ordinary acts of extraordinary kindness. Serving others this way contributes to making her retirement experience rewarding and purposeful.
One particularly moving encounter stays with Ann-Maree. One man experiencing homelessness had a beautiful singing voice and a particularly brilliant mind. Though watching his decline was heartbreaking, this man helped teach Ann-Maree to see the divine spark in every person.
Ann-Maree encourages potential volunteers to take that first step. Find a role that fits your abilities and comfort level. The rewards in personal growth, connection, and purpose far outweigh the costs.
“We make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give,” Ann-Maree said.
“Volunteering has shown me that in helping others, we're often the ones who receive the greatest blessings.”
