Building Confidence and Community at Vinnies North Parramatta

At Vinnies North Parramatta, we are proud to create a workplace where everyone has the opportunity to contribute, learn, and feel part of the team. Two great examples are Paddy and Vincent, who have both become valued members of our store community.

Paddy recently joined the North Parramatta store as part of his supported volunteering journey with Vinnies through the Supported in Employment (SIE) program within Disability & Inclusion, Vinnies Services. SIE is a program for people with disability that supports individuals to build confidence, develop practical skills, and work towards their employment goals in a supportive and inclusive environment. Paddy also volunteers at the Matthew Talbot Hostel Kitchen, where he has built a strong routine, developed confidence, and made a meaningful contribution. Taking on a second volunteering role at North Parramatta has been an exciting next step, allowing Paddy to continue growing his skills in a busy retail environment.

At the store, Paddy supports the donations area by sorting incoming stock and helping prepare quality items for the shop floor. He brings positive energy to his shifts and enjoys being part of the team. Outside of volunteering, Paddy is a passionate NRL fan and proudly supports the Wests Tigers, although he hasn’t been too happy with the recent State of Origin results.

Vincent has also quickly become a valued part of the North Parramatta team. Since starting at the store, he has shown enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to learn. Vincent supports both backroom and front-of-house operations, including receiving donations, sorting clothing, hanging stock, and assisting on the shop floor. He is also developing his customer service skills, including learning how to support customers at the counter and use the till with guidance. In his spare time, Vincent enjoys following soccer and has been keeping up with the World Cup, cheering on both Australia and England.

Paddy and Vincent are supported through the SIE program, where Employment Coaches work alongside Supported Volunteers to help them build confidence, develop practical skills, and achieve their individual and employment goals.

Ashika, Store Manager at Vinnies North Parramatta, said Paddy and Vincent have both made a positive impact on the store.

“Paddy and Vincent bring such a positive energy to our team. Their contribution supports the day-to-day running of the store, but more importantly, they help make our workplace more inclusive, welcoming, and connected. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow.”

With support from Ashika, Neil, the wider North Parramatta team, and the SIE Employment Coaches, Paddy and Vincent have been able to build skills at their own pace in a welcoming environment.

Their journeys show how meaningful volunteering can create opportunities for growth, confidence, connection, and inclusion while strengthening our stores and the communities we serve. If you know someone who could benefit from a supported volunteering opportunity, or would like to learn more about SIE, we welcome referrals through sie@vinnies.org.au.
