Dave* attended the Charles Gordon O’Neill House in Coniston, near Wollongong, for many years, initially for the Hub’s positive social environment and great food program.
Dave built a trusting relationship with the Society’s members, volunteers and employees at the Coniston Hub, who worked collaboratively across different teams in Vinnies Services and the local Conference to accompany him.
“Dave had been homeless for a long time, including couch surfing,” Christine Williams, long-term member and volunteer, said.
Over time, Dave set the course of his recovery from substance misuse, meanwhile choosing accommodation options, to take him from homelessness to temporary accommodation and then proudly into his very own home.
The respect is mutual and Dave is enthusiastic in his appreciation of Chris’ compassionate and empathetic work.
Dave regularly returns to Coniston to visit the community he now considers friends, continuing the relationship and telling the story of his journey.
Alienation from his family was particularly painful for Dave but he often comments how happy and safe he feels now.
Dave is passionate about his house and being able to make it his own, with his preferred furnishings, and relishes the dignity of having the freedom and safety to enjoy the simple things, such as having a cup of tea when and how he likes.
Chris avoids the limelight though agreed to speak to The Vincentian about her friendship with Dave. She highlighted the value of strong relationships between people we assist and members of the Society.
Chris is clearly a consummate Vincentian and Dave goes so far as to say that Chris completely changed his life, and then some.
Congratulations to you, Dave*, on your incredible journey and thank you, Chris, for your spirit of dedicated service.
