James Gothard of St Catherine Laboure’s Conference Gymea was honoured with the Dempsey Medal at St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday 6 July.
The Dempsey Medal is awarded annually by the Archbishop of Sydney to members of the Catholic clergy and laity for outstanding contributions and service to our Catholic Church.
Jim has been a member of the Conference for over 27 years and was Conference President for eight years. He is a Life Member of the St Vincent de Paul Society. In sacramental ministries in the parish, Jim served as an acolyte for many years, as a Reader and as a Minister of Holy Communion.
Frank Tierney, Gymea Conference President, was delighted at the recognition for Jim, who he has known for more than 30 years and seen his wonderful contributions to St Catherine Laboure Parish first hand.
“Jim goes about doing the work of Christ without any fuss or fanfare. He is a true example of our Catholic faith,” Frank said. “One of the things that stands out about Jim is his total humility.”
Jim was joined by family and friends at the special Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral as he received the wonderful accolade.
On behalf of the St Vincent de Paul Society, congratulations Jim!
