Pete’s Place is proud to recognise one of our long‑standing and much‑loved volunteers, Kate, whose generosity, warmth and commitment have made a lasting impact on the community. 

Kate first came to Pete’s Place while completing her placement as part of a mental health peer worker course. It was during this time that she developed a genuine connection to the service and the people it supports. What began as a placement soon became a passion, and Kate has continued to volunteer for several years. She is now one of the longest‑serving volunteers at Pete’s Place. 

When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering, Kate was unequivocal: the people. She values the opportunity to meet new faces, share stories and simply be present for someone who may just need some friendly conversation. Kate also speaks highly of the Pete’s Place team, describing the staff as “some of the best people I have ever known,” and noting that the sense of care and compassion is something you can truly feel. 

Outside of her volunteer work, Kate enjoys reading – especially thrillers and mystery novels. She has kept a journal since the age of 10 and hopes one day to turn her love of writing into a book. Kate also enjoys beach walks and spending quality time with family and friends. 

Adding a delightful personal touch, Kate shared a fun fact about herself for this article: she has a lifelong love of birds. As a child, she bred and showed chooks and even won several awards. Today, she shares her life with a hand‑raised parrot named Bandit, who is ten years old, very affectionate, enjoys chatting (and occasionally, swearing). Bandit, Kate says, “makes each day a good day.” 

We are most grateful for Kate’s ongoing dedication to Pete’s Place and the care she shows to everyone she meets. Thank you, Kate!
