Remembering Bett: A Pillar of Werris Creek

In the historic railway town of Werris Creek, Elizabeth Mary “Bett” Cherniayeff was a name synonymous with kindness and community spirit. Born on 9 June 1934, to Arthur and Cilla Kent, Bett was raised with a Catholic faith grounding and a strong sense of family.

In 1956, Bett married George Lancelot Cherniayeff, known to many as “Ivan,” a Russian immigrant. Together, Bett and Ivan built a life and raised four children, Kent, Sue, Steven, and Paul.

When George tragically passed away in 1974, aged 46, Bett shouldered the challenge of raising her children alone. With faith as her foundation, and determination, Bett ensured they received a sound Catholic education and a supportive upbringing.

Bett’s devotion extended beyond her family. She dedicated over forty years of service volunteering with the St Vincent de Paul Society. Starting with sorting clothes at a local primary school, later moving across to the Vinnies Shop on Single Street, and then serving with the St Thomas More Conference Werris Creek, Bett generously gave her time and spirit.

After retiring from volunteering in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, Bett’s absence was felt by her fellow volunteers and the wider Werris Creek community. People missed her warm smile, listening ear, and wise words.

Bett also had a great love for country music, often attending concerts locally and travelling, when she could, to see her favourite country music artists. She found joy in the strum of guitars, and the melodies that spoke to her soul became a cherished part of her life.

After a short struggle with illness, Bett passed away peacefully at the age of 89. She leaves a legacy of compassion, resilience and selfless dedication.

Rest in peace, Bett, “A beautiful soul.”
