Sourdough Loaves and Coogee Fishes: Celebrating Marie's Selflessness

Amid the materialism and self-obsession that the beach-side suburbs of Eastern Sydney can represent, not least on social media, local volunteers like Marie quietly remind us of what has true meaning through being a living example of kindness, humility, and generosity.

Every week, Marie dedicates time and effort to collect clothing and beautiful food items, especially the delicious sourdough loaves donated by Organic Bread Bar, South Dowling Street, to support people we assist at the South Coogee Vinnies Van stop – Bayside Run.

Marie's selfless acts in the present age evoke the biblical event of the loaves and fishes (Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-44, Luke 9:10-17, John 6:1-14), where Jesus miraculously fed a multitude of people with five loaves and two fishes, encouraging the large gathering to the heights of love and generosity. This poignant reminder of compassion and generosity inspires us to embody the values we hold dear.

Marie's humility and willingness to serve others without seeking recognition are qualities that should be revered in our society. In contrast to oversharing about yourself, a la some influencers prioritising fame and wealth, Marie and individuals like her embody the essence of where we can find true value, through having a servant’s heart.

Prioritising the needs of others demonstrates a deeper understanding of what truly brings happiness and fulfillment, underscoring the profound impact that the selfless individuals like Marie have on our communities.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Marie and the Organic Bread Bar, South Dowling Street for their tireless efforts to support others. Your kindness is a beacon of hope, inspiring us to reevaluate our values and strive for a more compassionate society.

Let us celebrate and emulate individuals like Marie, who remind us that true greatness lies not in self-seeking but in serving others with humility and generosity.

Let us all strive to be more like Marie – to start each day with gratitude and a willingness to serve others and may we recognise and appreciate the quiet heroes among us, who selflessly make a difference in the lives of others.

Thank you, Marie, for being a shining light in our community. May your kindness and humility inspire us all to become better versions of ourselves.
