St Francis Xavier Conference Wollongong Celebrates Centenary

St Francis Xavier Conference Wollongong marked an historic milestone in September, with the community gathering for a joyful celebration of 100 years of service, presence and impact, at St Francis Xavier Cathedral on Harbour Street in Wollongong.

This extraordinary achievement reflects a commitment to the Vincentian mission that has spanned generations of Conference members with an enduring devotion to serve others.

Spirits were high at the special Mass, with a look back upon some of the Conference’s highlights over the past century inspiring and invigorating the congregation.

From its earliest days, St Francis Xavier Conference has played an important role within the Wollongong Central Council, which itself was established on 21 July 1935.

The Central Council has been instrumental in supporting vulnerable people across the Illawarra, Shoalhaven, Southern Highlands, Campbelltown, and Camden. Last year, the more than thirty Conferences comprising the Wollongong Central Council area provided aid to over 12,000 people and delivered $1.55 million in assistance.

St Francis Xavier Conference’s legacy finds further expression in the number of remarkable special works undertaken by members, beginning with their first special work in 1925: distributing 525 books as part of a commitment to spreading knowledge and support.

During the mid to late 1940s, in a potent demonstration of compassion, members began collecting clothing for war victims in Europe. In 1967, the Conference opened a night shelter for homeless men, which has evolved into today’s Crisis Support Hub in Coniston and continues to offer essential services to people in need.

The Conference also supported the development of a migrant hostel for new Australians in the 1970s, showing a welcome to those starting their lives anew in the city, which was often a difficult experience for people.

St Francis Xavier Conference remains a cornerstone of its community today. Last year, its eleven dedicated members assisted 316 people, providing vital practical support with food, clothing, household goods, accommodation, transport, and utility bills. The combined service records of current members of St Francis Xavier Conference represents over 150 years of service to the Society.

The Centenary Mass was also attended by Peter Houweling, NSW State Council President, and Peter Doris, Wollongong Central Council President, among other dignitaries.

As we celebrate this centenary, we honour the efforts of past and present members whose dedication has created a legacy of far-reaching care and support.

The St Vincent de Paul Society congratulates St Francis Xavier Conference Wollongong for 100 years of extraordinary service and is deeply thankful for its members perpetual commitment that continues to light the way for those seeking a hand up.
