Leaders from 38 civil society organisations, unions, and faith groups within the Sydney Alliance gathered on Wednesday 30th October at Bowman Hall, Blacktown, for a landmark Convention joined by representatives from both State and Federal governments. The event highlighted the Alliance’s collective commitment to advancing critical issues in housing, energy and climate action.
It was an evening to celebrate recent wins with the State Government and look forward to a pathway for action ahead of next year's Federal Election. It was a full house with 426 leaders in attendance. Four politicians, including NSW Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Rose Jackson; NSW MP, Stephen Bali; and Federal representatives, Senator David Shoebridge and MP Susan Templeman all attended.
Staffers from the offices of 6 other Federal politicians also joined to hear the voices of the Sydney community. At the 42 table groups, stories were shared about housing, the cost of living, climate impacts and energy. Listening to people share, it was clear that community members are doing it tough.
Reflecting on solutions, it was also clear that political action can make the dream of affordable, quality homes and an adequate standard of living in a healthy environment a reality. Senator Shoebridge and MP Susan Templeman both committed to raising the issues identified at the Convention with their party colleagues.
Sydney Alliance now looks ahead to 2025 and working with decision makers to address the pressing issues facing communities across Sydney and Australia.
