The Rule is the fundamental governing document that guides the operations of the Society of St Vincent de Paul. Over the last couple of years National Council has undertaken a review of the Rule - Articles for Australia. The Australian Articles are reviewed approximately every 10-15 years. This process plays an important role in keeping our membership rules relevant as the Society grows and responds to the community’s evolving needs.
The review process involved three rounds of consultation with members. The first stage involved a broad call for feedback on The Rule to help guide the review committee’s priorities. In the second stage, National Council released a draft and invited further comment. In NSW, we asked Conferences, Councils, and individual members to provide their input through a survey. The State Council then established a working group to review this feedback, undertake a detailed assessment, and prepare a report on behalf of members in NSW.
The State Council working group submitted its final recommendations to National Council. National Council’s Rule review working group formulated the final review draft and submitted it to the International Consul General (ICG) last year.
On the 17 January 2026, National Council were notified that The Rule as reviewed was approved by the Permanent Section. This is a wonderful achievement following years of work and dedication by many.
Thank you to every member who shared their time and insights. Your contributions were and are vital to shaping the future of the Society in Australia.
The State Council President is working with National Council and the NSW support team on a plan to communicate the new The Rule in NSW. More information, including where and how to access the new version will be provided when it is available.
