A safe Society for all

As we move into March and our programs continue in full swing, we want to take a moment to say thank you! The time, energy and assistance you pour into our good works are greatly appreciated. We know that your primary goal is to help, but we want to make sure that while you’re looking out for others, you are also looking out for yourself.

Mandatory Safety Induction

To ensure everyone understands our operational risks and safety procedures, the Online Safety Induction is now a mandatory requirement for every member and volunteer.

  • You can complete this at your own pace

  • Simply log on to the MAVS Portal and complete the training module

  • We understand that digital platforms may not be accessible to everyone. If you are unable to complete the induction online, please notify your Conference President or Volunteer Manager to arrange an alternate method of completion.

Working Safely - Know your limits

We’ve noticed some of you are going above and beyond – literally! We’ve identified instances where individuals have moved heavy appliances, such as washing machines, upstairs.

While we love your ‘can do’ attitude, please do not attempt to move heavy furniture or white goods. All heavy lifting and appliance moves are normally handled by our preferred suppliers. If the People we Assist need something heavy moved, contact your support office or Procurement team.

Pause, review, correct approach

Safety is a proactive practice. We ask you to adopt a pause, review, correct approach to every task you’re about to complete.

  • Identify the task – what are the specific requirements?

  • Review the method – how are you going to perform the work?

  • Confirm safety – ensure you are always working within the established safe work practices. If a task appears to be unsafe, please cease and seek guidance.

On the Road

When it comes to getting our People we Assist from A to B, we have driving standards to keep everyone protected.

  • Use Vinnies vehicles rather than your own private car. This ensures proper insurance coverage and vehicle maintenance

  • Follow the mandatory safety rules that support our protocols for driving and regional travel, before you drive, and when on the road.

  • No Person we Assist to be transported alone. A minimum of 2 workers must be present during any transit to ensure safety and accountability.

For more information about driver safety and our standards, visit the Driver Safety MAVS page (login required).

Situational Awareness and Visitation Guidelines

Maintaining high situational awareness is essential when conducting home visits. Before entering a residence, please follow these steps:

  1. Complete a CAMS Review for any specific alerts, history, or concerns regarding the location or PWA.

  1. As you arrive, do a quick scan of the surroundings before parking your vehicle and entering the home. Be mindful of any obvious hazards. If you feel unsafe, do not stop or enter the home.

  1. Ensure your actions align with the Safe Home Visitation Policy and Guidelines (log in required) that underpin our operations and safe work practices. Familiarise yourself with these beforehand.

Keep Up to Date

For more details on incorporating everyday safety into your tasks, make it a habit to regularly visit the Safety and Wellbeing Resources on the MAVS Website (log in required). It’s your go-to resource to access fact sheets, policy and procedures, and find key contacts.

Keeping the Safety and Wellbeing Resources link in your "favourites" ensures you always have the right information at your fingertips.

Remember if there’s a safety concern, please raise this with your Conference President, Regional Director or Volunteer Manager as soon as possible.

Thank you for your cooperation in making Vinnies safe. Your health and safety are our highest priority as we continue our important work together.
