At the heart of our mission is the incredible work you do every day. Whether you are assisting at one of our hubs or visiting the people we assist at home, your contribution is invaluable. However, “doing good” should never come at the expense of your own safety.
To ensure we can continue our work effectively, we want to share some reminders on how we stay safe together.
Respect and Conduct
Our Code of Conduct is a framework for a respectful and supportive workplace. Adhering to these acceptable behaviours ensures that every interaction remains professional, safe, and positive, regardless of the location of the activity. The Code of Conduct applies to every employee, member, and volunteer.
Navigating high risk sites
Some of our locations carry higher risk profiles than others based on the nature of the work we do, or the environment we work in. At these high-risk sites, specific risk controls are mandatory and must be implemented before work begins. Please pay close attention to site-specific signage, communication, and briefings, ensuring you are familiar with the safety requirements before you begin your task/activity.
Personal safety
Home visitation is a core part of our mission, and they require a proactive approach to personal safety. It can be tempting to continue through a situation to help someone, however putting yourself in harm’s way is never the requirement.
5 key safety controls for home visitation
-
Always check the CAMS system to see if we have worked with this PWA before and any relevant safety alerts or instructions before heading out.
-
Always conduct home visits in pairs, and it is recommended that one member is a woman.
-
Ensure you check in with your designated contact before and after the visitation. Ensure your mobile is easily accessible and has a full battery.
-
As you arrive, scan the surroundings. If something does not feel right, you have full support to postpone the visit. If a PWA behaves in a threatening manner, immediately terminate the visit and exit the premises. Make sure you create an alert in CAMS.
-
Always keep yourself between the person and the exit. Avoid being boxed into a room. Never transport PWAs in your personal vehicle.
Your wellbeing matters
Supporting the community is rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding. We encourage you to make use of our Wellbeing and RUOK? resources, including Converge Support whenever you need them. If a particular visit or interaction has left you feeling unsettled or stressed, please reach out to your Conference President or Pastoral Care. Taking care of yourself is the first step in being able to support others.
