Little Cards, Big Message: The St James School and Conference Partnership

At Christmas, small acts of kindness can carry extraordinary meaning. Last year, one such act came from students at St James Catholic Primary School in Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Glebe who, working with the St James Conference, were invited to create handmade cards to accompany individual gift vouchers. The students responded with a beautiful collection of Christmas cards for people supported by the local Conference.

Conference Members included the cards alongside Christmas gift vouchers distributed in gift bags to people in the Glebe area experiencing hardship and isolation. For many recipients, particularly those living alone, the cards brought practical support and a touching reminder that they are valued by their local community.

What began as a classroom activity became a meaningful expression of faith, compassion and community connection. Before creating the cards, the students gathered in prayer:

“May these cards remind others that they are loved, and may they bring comfort and happiness this Christmas.”

The students then designed and decorated each card by hand, filling them with thoughtful messages of hope and encouragement. One read:

One student charmingly signed their card: “From the Catholics!”

Teachers used the project as an opportunity to speak with students about compassion, dignity and the importance of caring for others. In doing so, the activity became an experience of living faith in action for some of our youngest members of the Vincentian community.

The inclusion of gift vouchers also reflects an important shift in the way Conferences are supporting people at Christmas. Rather than giving hampers alone, vouchers give people and families the dignity and freedom to choose the food and items that are meaningful to their culture, traditions and celebrations. It is a personal and contemporary approach, one that recognises the diverse needs, dietary requirements and circumstances of the people we assist.

Partnerships like this demonstrate the many ways the Society continues to evolve while remaining grounded in its core mission: serving others with compassion, respect and human dignity. In the simple exchange between school students and those receiving support, the true spirit of Christmas was quietly present, the spirit of hope, generosity and reaching out to others.
