Students from Sacred Heart Parish Primary School, Broken Hill, demonstrated outstanding generosity through their 2026 Lenten Appeal, collecting non-perishable food and essential items to support people in need within their local community. As shared by the school, the donations were given “to support our community… helping those in need with dignity and care.”
In a powerful display of compassion and organisation, students assembled approximately 20 washing basket hampers, each thoughtfully wrapped and filled to the brim. These were presented to Sacred Heart Conference Members Pat Smith and Darryl Winkley during the school assembly on 23 April. The hampers were so generously packed that it took two students to carry each one, with Pat’s ute nearly overflowing by the end of the presentation.
Regional President Helen Woodman reflected on the care behind every basket. Alongside pantry staples, students included small luxury items such as hand creams and soaps — simple comforts often out of reach for people experiencing hardship. Each hamper also featured a “donated by Sacred Heart Parish Primary School” sticker and handwritten messages of hope and encouragement, offering a warm personal touch.
The Broken Hill Region is unique, with Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Conferences working collaboratively from one centre to support the community. Several hampers have already been distributed, providing immediate relief and reassurance to individuals and families doing it tough.
Conference Members shared that this initiative was more than a donation, it was a heartfelt expression of solidarity. The students’ care not only met practical needs but reminded recipients that their community stands with them, offering dignity, hope and a sense of belonging.
