Modern slavery is closer to us than we might think. It can be hidden in everyday goods and services, and it can also affect people in our own communities. In Australia, more than 41,000 people are estimated to be experiencing modern slavery, while globally, over 50 million people are affected (2023 Global Slavery Index).
Modern Slavery is a profound violation of human dignity and stands in direct contrast to the values that guide our work as Vincentians. As a Society committed to justice and compassion, we are working to better identify and support people experiencing exploitation and to address the conditions that allow it to occur.
Modern slavery can take many forms. It may be hidden in our supply chains, deceptive recruiting or bonded labour, or occur behind closed doors through forced marriage, trafficking or domestic servitude. Modern slavery affects both adults and children, with women and girls disproportionately impacted.
To strengthen our response, the Society is preparing its 2026 Modern Slavery Statement. The Statement sets out our commitments, including how we identify people who may be experiencing modern slavery and how we support them toward safety.
The Society considers people experiencing modern slavery to be Adults at Risk who are entitled to safeguarding protections.
As members, you may come into contact with people who are vulnerable to exploitation. Recognising the signs, understanding the risks and knowing what to do next is an important part of safe and effective visitation and assistance.
What you can do:
-
Complete the optional Modern Slavery learning module in the MAVS learning portal. In partnership with the Australian Catholic Anti-Slavery Network (ACAN) the module covers what modern slavery is, who may be vulnerable and how exploitation can occur. Log in via the MAVS website .
-
Check that your safeguarding compliance training is up to date.
-
In August, read the Society’s updated Modern Slavery Statement to understand our approach and commitments.
-
If you suspect someone you are assisting may be experiencing modern slavery, please refer the matter to the Safeguarding Team so they can assess and investigate the situation. They can be contacted by email on safeguarding@vinnies.org.au or by phoning 1800 4SUPPORT (1800 478 776).
